The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence

Thursday, Oct. 2 at 7:30pm at Gaillard Center
presented by Charleston Gaillard Center, International African American Museum, and MOJA Arts Festival

After their remarkable 2023 presentation of Drumfolk, Step Afrika! returns with The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence. This work depicts the journey of African Americans from the rural South to the industrial North, fleeing Jim Crow and racial violence in the early 1900s. Inspired by Jacob Lawrence’s 60-panel “The Migration Series” (1940-41), the award-winning dance company uses the series’ imagery and colors to convey this story through rhythms and movement.
