Redux Contemporary Art Center is thrilled to present residue, a solo show highlighting the work of Kate MacNeil. Redux’s Annual Summer solo exhibition showcases the diverse practice of a solo artists, emphasizing the unique mixture of media that can compose a retrospective exhibition.

Rooted in a traditional practice of drawing and painting, Kate MacNeil’s work explores the limits of printmaking, interspersing her practice with video, installation, and performance. Through these intersections of media, her work explores themes of memory, loss, and mental illness.

In residue, MacNeil’s work draws connections between the physical and psychological through performative action. Utilizing the body as an impetus for mark-making, her work provides an analogous space in which to conceptualize the physical form and its memories. As the body performs for the viewer, even in stasis, the work serves to act not as a memorial, but rather a continuous action that is ever-present.

residue seeks to confront the silence surrounding traumatic events, mental illness, and the messiness of healing. Ultimately, it calls into question the cyclical nature of violence – what is the language of trauma and how does individual identity resist or define its mark?

Born in Asheville, NC in 1989, Kate MacNeil graduated from the College of Charleston with a BA in Studio Art in 2011, where she developed a traditional background in drawing, painting, and printmaking. From 2011 to 2016, she worked with organizations such as the Gibbes Museum of Art, Sideshow Press, and Redux Contemporary Art Center to promote printmaking within the Charleston area. She graduated from the University at Buffalo with a MFA in Studio Art in 2018. She has been featured at the International Print Center New York, PrintAustin, Print Matters (Houston), and CEPA Gallery (Buffalo).
