For some, life begins in middle age; for others, it is a time for stocktaking or even dread. Journalist and broadcaster Miranda Sawyer’s mid-life crisis struck in her forties. It did not take a traditional form – she did not run off with her Pilates teacher – but the sudden jolt prompted an exploration of this frequently mocked life stage. Her resulting book Out of Time is based on interviews to discover how a wide range of artists, musicians, friends and colleagues dealt with the experience. Screenwriter and novelist William Nicholson believes that mid-life is a time for positive re-invention. His most recent novel Adventures in Modern Marriage is set very close to Charleston UK over the weekend of the 2015 Parliamentary election.
