Come celebrate Black History Month with Art Forms & Theatre Concepts, Inc., the Lowcountry’s premier African-American led theatre company. AFTC will present “A Tribute to Paul Laurence Dunbar” written and directed by Art Gilliard. The drama focuses on two widowed sisters, Mattie Cochran (Jackie Mickel) and Sarah Pettigrew (Veronica Gaillard) who live together after the death of their husbands despite their differences. In this drama, the sisters are looking forward to a night out on the town when a call from Mattie’s daughter Oliva shatters their anticipated plans. Determined to not waste a night, they decide to celebrate anyway in the comfort of their home. The elegant dresses are put on, the food is spread out, and their love of Paul Laurence Dunbar’s literature is recited. As the tribute unfolds in the sisters’ living room, we learn about Paul Laurence Dunbar, an accomplished African American poet and novelist in the late 1800s, publishing several literary works including six volumes of poetry before his untimely death at age 33. His focusing on African-American accomplishments and pride, helped set the stage for Harlem Renaissance poets 20 years after his death, and continues to influence contemporary American literature today. The cast also includes: Ann Caldwell as Katherine Hemphill, Keith Alston as Rev. Dr. Jasper Luke and Roy Gilliard as Nathaniel Brown.
