It’s an age-old classic, a Christmas tradition, and a timeless story. A Christmas Story hits The Flowertown Players’ stage this December. “This story has great sentimental value to me. My brothers and I still watch it together, but now with the addition of my nieces and nephews. When you boil it down, this story is about a family. Although they are flawed, they love and find joy in each other,” says Director Elissa Horrell on her participation in this classic tale. With cold lampposts, leg lamps, and the newest Red Ryder BB Gun, the story that has delighted audiences and cheered in the holiday season comes to life on stage. You may ask, how does this version stand out from the TNT classic played on a 24 hour loop? Horrell says, “So many of us (myself included) grew up with A Christmas Story as a yearly tradition, I think the play brings those memories to life. Watching some of our favorite characters come alive on stage, and hearing those famous lines, brings us all one step closer to our fond Christmas memories. We also get the chance to see Ralph, as an adult, and truly live his experiences.”

“You’ll shoot your eye out” becomes a consistent chant from Ralphie’s parents; but Ralphie is determined to get the latest Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Watch all the shenanigans unfold for the Parker family in Indiana. Will Raphie get his dream BB gun? “A Christmas Story is still…one of the more enchanting ways to be transported to a world beyond our own. Yet it also serves to remind us how lucky we are to live a culturally rich life.” – Plain Dealer.

It’s a truly magical event for the whole family. The cast includes a wide age range of veteran and new actors. When asked how Horrell would approach a diverse ensemble and what her biggest challenges would be she replied, “I like to look at it as more of what can this actor (young or veteran) bring to the table? More seasoned actors have natural instincts and perhaps a better understanding of how to prepare for a role. Young actors however, have an innocence and fearlessness that we as adults, long to revisit. Both of these types of actors are extremely complimentary to the other.” With this inspiring directorial perceptive actors and audiences alike can expect to experience a playful innocence throughout the show. “If our audiences can leave with a smile, and a fond memory of Christmas past, we will be pleased. I truly hope to bring joy and laughter to our audience, and start the Christmas season off right,” says Horrell.
