Ann Caldwell and the Magnolia Singers will close out the Candlelight Concert season at the Unitarian Church in Charleston at 7:30 on April 5 with a rousing performance of their a capella Gullah spirituals and stories that pay homage to their ancestors. Their music ranges from spirituals to R & B, jazz, gospel, folk, and children’s songs, and their enthusiastic call and response style will have everybody singing, clapping, stomping, and dancing. The Magnolia Singers were commissioned to sing backup vocals for Angie Grenadier’s original composition, “Southern Strong,” a tribute to the Emmanuel Nine, and have performed on the Today show and Good Morning America. A reception follows the concert with an art gallery opening featuring works by Amy Major. Babysitting is provided.
Proceeds go to music programs for underserved students in the Charleston area.
