The College of Charleston School of the Arts will present a concert by Bedlam, an Early Music duo composed of soprano Kayleen Sánchez and lutenist Laudon Schuett. The duo will perform 16th century works by French composer Jehan Chardavoine and English composer Thomas Campion.
The concert, part of the College’s 2nd Monday Series, will take place on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. The campus’ historic Alumni Memorial Hall at 66 George St. will set an appropriate stage for this intimate concert.
General admission is $15 for adults and $10 for all students with school I.D. Tickets are available online at Credit cards cannot be processed at the venue, but cash can be accepted at the door.
Bedlam was founded in 2013 and is dedicated to exploring the rich repertoires of music for voice and lute in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Kayleen Sánchez is an active performer, recording artist and pedagogue. Her recent appearances include operatic roles with the Haymarket Opera Company in Chicago, an appearance with the Newberry Consort, performances with the St. Charles Singers, and recitals at the Winnetka Recital Series in Winnetka, Ill., the Winterpast Recital Series in Milwaukee, Wis., and recitals at the Dakota Sky International Piano Festival in Sioux Falls, S.D. In December 2014, she was the soprano soloist for Handel’s Messiah with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, directed by Maestro Delta David Gier. Her performances have been broadcast on Chicago’s WFMT and on South Dakota Public Broadcasting television and radio.
Sánchez has been a featured soloist in two albums of Mozart choral works with the St. Charles Singers and the Metropolis Chamber Orchestra: St. Charles Singers. She has recorded songs by composer George Morey, which will be featured in a new release titled “Music of George Morey.” In addition, Sánchez is highlighted on the CD “Magus Insipiens” (Soundset Recordings), performing three song cycles composed by her husband, Paul Sánchez, and she recently recorded Schubert’s Schwanengesang with pianist Johnandrew Slominski on a Viennese-style fortepiano, also on the Soundset label. She will also be featured on the upcoming CD, “West Meets East” (Albany Records).
Sánchez received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Vocal Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. She is currently a member of the voice faculty at the College of Charleston
Laudon Schuett is a lutenist and early music specialist. In a recent review, the Classical Voice of North Carolina (CVNC) said, “Schuett’s rhythmic sense is unparalleled…. a masterful performer….[and] a brilliant educator.”
Schuett wrote an article for the Lute of Society of America on articulation and interpretation in Nicolas Vallet’s music. He codirected a performance of John Blow’s “Venus and Adonis,” the first staged production in the Eastman School of Music’s new recital hall, Hatch Hall.
In 2013, he formed the duo, Bedlam, with Kayleen Sánchez. They have since toured the country and recorded their first album, “BEDLAM,” which is available on Soundset Recordings and Athyr Records. Their second album, “Died for Love,” also on Soundset Recordings, was recently released this year.
Schuett has also been a guest lecturer and performer at the University of Kentucky, Cornell University, Arizona State University, Baylor University, Wheaton University, and Johns Hopkins University. He is now an active performer and teacher in Durham, NC.
Schuett earned his undergraduate degree in Guitar Performance under Frank Koonce at Arizona State University and later entered the graduate program at the Eastman School of Music, studying lute under Paul O’Dette. Laudon completed his Master of Music degree in Early Music in 2010 and completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Early Music, in 2014.
